[Action/Video] Transmission 003 - In Which Vastra Returns

[By Vastra's reckoning, years have passed. Her position at Scotland Yard has been elevated considerably, and in addition her little inner circle has expanded to a veritable 'Gang' of sorts. She and Jenny were married and happy, the Doctor had some of his familiar spark back, and yet...]

[Vastra leaves the woods, her hat veil trailing behind her as she carries it in her hand. Luceti, again. Warmer this time, thankfully, however it was not a welcome sight.]

[Not much seems to have changed, though upon her return to Luceti Vastra regrets leaving behind the few friends she had made. Natasha, Mr. Barnes, Miss Amelia, and Loki to name a few. However life went on and it went at a very quick clip after her return. Now those feelings of regret were resurfacing. Part of her wonders if they escaped, and hopes they did. Part of her feels slightly deflated that should they be gone, she would have to start completely over. This time with the knowledge that her wife was missing her, not just her paramour.]

[She walks down into the village, the path still familiar, repositioning the black hat and veil over her face. She takes it in, as much as she can, and feels very uneasy when she gets the sense that the changes she sees are extremely superficial...]

[When she arrives at the room she had, there is plastic over the furniture--and though the clothes and personal items are gone, it appears the heavier things never moved. Vastra pulls the cover off her familiar chair, sits, and opens her journal.]

Is there anyone here who recalls seeing me a few years ago? I realize this is most likely a strange message, however as unsettling as Luceti is, little seems to have changed since my departure. I suppose this is simply the nature of this place?

[She stifles a wince at that, then carefully chooses her words to try and maneuver this mix-up.]

Ahh. I think there's been some slight confusion.

Confusion? [She frowns slightly.] Howso? You... are Miss Natasha Romanoff, are you not?

[Because the way Vastra sees it, the only possibility for confusion would be if Natasha had a twin she never mentioned.]

[Her smile is quick to appear at that and she nods her head before the woman starts thinking there's more than one of her.] I am, yes. But... you haven't been gone years. I only just saw you a few weeks ago.

A few weeks ago? [Vastra looks surprised initially, then slightly annoyed. So the Malnosso have been meddling in both space and time. Why is she not surprised?]

[This is, from Vastra's point of view, a colossal problem. Messing with time, with timelines and dimensions and tearing so many holes in space, is a very easy way to destroy everything. That much she knows for a fact. And with the Doctor off chasing Clara all over time and space, the probability of something going wrong is astronomical. Vastra always erred on the side of caution and assumed that anyone who wasn't a Time Lord had no clue how to navigate time and space.]

Well, isn't that interesting. [She flares her nostrils slightly in aggravation, but eventually smiles.] Do I look like I've aged much?

[That question earns a crooked smile from her and Natasha shakes her head in bemusement.] Not that I can see from here. But perhaps we can have tea some time and compare notes.

Yes, please. I need to know everything that has been happening here since I left. Which... I admit, is slightly fuzzy.

We should catch up properly of course, but at least tell me if you have been well? In general?

It's been... relatively quiet. Most people... Well. There's been some interesting consequences since Valentine's Day. But I'll fill you in on what I can when I see you.

[She hesitates at Vastra's question, because there's so many ways she could answer that. Her reply, when it comes, is carefully spoken.] Well enough.

Ah... yes. I imagine the consequences of that were somewhat awkward for some people... [Though her tone indicates that she doesn't feel anything of the sort towards Natasha. She was a lovely young woman, of course, and she did remind Vastra of Jenny at points, but Vastra didn't hold strange situations against perfectly nice people.]

[The answer Natasha gives her, however, isn't satisfactory.]

My apartments were left mostly as they were when I arrived home, I believe. However I would be grateful for some assistance removing all the furniture drapes. If you did not have other plans, of course.

That's quite an understatement. [Natasha's tone is a little dry at that, but there's still a smile lingering on her lips. She inclines her head at the invitation, taking it for the offer of company it was.]

I don't. Would you like me to come over now?

Would you enjoy sitting in a room with furniture-shaped specters? [She chuckles softly.] If I could trouble you for the tea, I would be very grateful. The foods I had stored appear to have been removed.

Probably not. I'll stop and pick some up on my way. Be there soon.

[And now Vastra has to attempt to at least get that 'musty apartments smell' out before Natasha arrives. This is probably futile, but she goes around opening most of the windows, removing her hat, opening the cabinets and seeing what's been left alone. Fortunately she still has her dishes and kettle, though those seem to be the only personal accoutrements that are left.]

[By the time Natasha arrives, Vastra has started the kettle and is wiping down some of the dustier surfaces. Not that much dust has settled in a few weeks, but she hasn't actually had a visitor to her Luceti apartments yet. Shabby as they are now, and she's certain Natasha will understand, she still wants them to look somewhat nice.]

[Natasha shows up a short while later with two bags in tow, which she juggles with a moment before knocking on the door. When it opens a moment later, she flashes Vastra with a rueful grin and a slight shrug as she holds up the bags.]

Alright, so I might have picked up a little more than tea, but I thought you might be running low on other supplies too. This should at least hold you over until you get settled and can get down to the shops yourself.

[When Vastra opens the door, she is quite surprised to see Natasha holding so many things. It's very thoughtful, more thoughtful than Vastra had expected, and it touches her little cold-blooded heart. Even if most of it might not be her usual diet, it's a gesture that Vastra very much appreciates.]

Goodness, thank you Natasha. [Vastra's surprise easily slides into a smile and she reaches to take some of the bags from Natasha.] I hope it wasn't too much of an inconvenience.

Not at all. [Natasha hands a couple of the bags over with a faint smile before slipping inside herself and settling the rest on Vastra's table.] I was there anyway.

[She turns, giving the other woman an assessing look for a moment, curiosity written in the slight tilt of her head.] So, I'm not sure 'welcome back' is quite the right thing to say here, considering, but you know what I mean.

And I wouldn't say 'it's good to see you' is the right thing either, but the sentiment is the same. [She smiles reassuringly and sets her half of the bags on the table as well. It looks as though there's something to make a few sandwiches with, so she removes a few things from the bags as well as the tea.]

Are you hungry? I find that talking over a meal is usually much more pleasant, even if the subject matter is not.

Are you planning for unpleasant subject matters? [Natasha looks amused by that as she helps unpack the bags, setting the supplies out on the table so Vastra can do with them as she wishes.]

When I asked how you had been, you replied you were 'well enough'. I assumed this meant something happened in my absence. [She turns back from setting some things into the cupboard.] Was I wrong?

There were just some... complications. With the Valentines Day shift. [When Vastra turns back, she turns away, busying herself with putting away the supplies.] It's mostly blown over now.

Oh? Do tell. [Vastra grins as she's putting more of the things away and setting aside the tea.] Did you break some poor starry-eyed young man's heart?

[Natasha's hand hesitates for the briefest of moments before she gives a laugh, sounding completely normal as she shakes her head and reaches for another item, purposefully not turning around.] No. Not quite.

Ah, well, is there someone I have to find in a dark alley at night, then? [Vastra chuckles and opens the box of tea (and how quaint, it's already in little bags...) and puts out two cups.] I admit Natasha, I can see you hold your emotions very close. But I am well aware that the apparent absence of them on the surface does not mean they do not exist.

[That did have her glancing sideways finally, meeting Vastra's gaze, her expression faintly rueful.] No. Nothing like that, either. Besides, if someone needs to be found in a dark alley at night, I'm just as capable of doing it myself.

[She closes the cupboard door and leans back against the counter, her pose casual, but there's a slight hint of defensiveness in the way she crosses her arms over her chest.] I never claimed they didn't. I sometimes wish they didn't. [She concedes with a huff of laughter, glancing down.] Although not really. Perhaps only when they are being difficult.

Of course, I have absolute faith in your abilities dear. But I'm offering moral support. [She smiles apologetically. Apparently she's overstepped a bit. It happened, quite often actually. Especially in the case of humans.]

Well, there is an alternative to emotions. Having absolutely nothing happening inside of you. Putting your brain into a robot. Though I've heard it described as 'a fate worse than death'.

[Something flares briefly in Natasha's gaze and she glances away, a shiver slipping down her spine. Her lips curl wryly for a moment before she shakes her head.] Yes. I can imagine it would be. That's not really an acceptable alternative, when it comes down to it.

[She flashes Vastra a small smile in apology.] And I know you are. I'm sorry. I'm not very good at accepting... sympathy.
